Benefits from regular martial arts practise include:

  • Effective self defence
  • Improved health and fitness
  • Stress reduction
  • Greater confidence and motivation
  • Self discipline
  • Balance, control and flexibility training

Our adults and children’s classes follow a similar syllabus but the approach to training and the intensity of testing is very different. Whilst it is certainly possible for parents and children to learn in parallel and even practise together at home, our classes are not geared towards mixed training.  Adult classes can at times contain more adult considerations, that are realistic but perhaps not always suitable for children.

Martial Arts is great for developing both the mind and body, improving awareness, self-discipline, confidence and determination.  Overcoming each small challenge as you progress towards and beyond black belt, we hope to help you learn to control your fear and remain focused, so you can experience success in all areas of your life. Martial Arts has the added bonus that as you learn to defend yourself, the physical exercise involved will enhance your health, coordination, balance, flexibility and strength.

What can you expect to learn?

Our syllabus is heavily influenced by ninjutsu and jujutsu type practises.  Although our etiquette and dojo manners are on the traditional side, our physical practise is not always so traditional.  For example, our ninjutsu is a mix of traditional ninjutsu kata as learned by Bo Munthe, and the more modern approach of Stephen Hayes’ To-Shin Do; twentieth century ninja practise.  Our jujutsu is more of the Small-Circles flavour, than what might be experienced at one of the more traditional schools of Japanese Jujutsu.

In order to advance to the higher black belt grades in Mu Te Ryu, practitioners are required to study other schools and develop their own kata.  Many of the Mu Te Shin Do kata are the kata created by founder Robert Armstrong during his progression through Mu Te Ryu; a fusion of techniques from some of the traditional Kodakan Judo, Ninjutsu, and Jujutsu kata and kihon practises.

Our weapons training is a mix of serious self defence study and, well… errr not so serious but fun “I look good in the mirror” practise.  We have a few impractical kata to introduce some of the more popular weapons seen in martial arts movies like nunchaku, sai and kama; although real weapons in there own right, our kata is just for fun.  Our real weapons study, the majority of our weapons training, consist of the very practical and awesome stick, chain, and sword arts of the ninja and samurai.

What happens in class?

All classes begin (and end) with the practise of gratitude and respect. Through our bowing-in and bowing-out ceremonies, as well as other classroom etiquette, we show our readiness to learn and say thank you;

  • To each other, for making it possible for us to grow
  • To our teachers, for their unique experiences
  • To martial arts itself, for the benefits offered to us

Learning to fall safely is the first and most important skill we teach; falling over is after all a more common occurrence than is a fight. Next we work to develop awareness, balance and movement in order to avoid or evade an attack. Finally we develop physical techniques such as blocking, punching, kicking, and grappling as a last resort to possible conflict.

Students will learn and practise through kata (set patterns) and kihon (attack drills) in a safe supervised environment. At lower levels unarmed combative techniques are studied and at higher levels weapons are introduced to enhance unarmed skills. Safety is paramount and students wear protective gloves. Soft pads and shields are also used to develop reflexes, power and focus.

Self defence drills are learned at low speed and at the higher levels must be demonstrated at high speed high speed whilst wearing body armour. Mu Te Shin Do is a non-competitive style of martial arts – it is about self improvement.

We do not teach a “win at all cost” mentality, but instead believe our training is about living. The best fights are, more often than not, the ones that never happen.

Monitoring progress

Grading’s are used to assess student progress and award colored belts as they successfully pass each milestone on the way to black belt.

Students practicing a minimum of 3 hrs per week could expect to grade every 4 months during Level 1, and increasing to 8 months or more in Level 2.

Level 1 is White to Green belt.  Level 2 is Blue to Brown belt.

What to wear

During the trial period students should wear a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms.

Once the trial is over students wear a training uniform (gi-gee); Level 1 wear all white, Level 2 wear all black. A plain white or black t-shirt (to match uniform) can be worn underneath the jacket during cooler weather or instead of the jacket during hot summer days. You can purchase our Mu Te Shin Do black tshirt from your instructor.

What to bring?

Please bring a drink of water to every class.
