Goshinjutsu translates as “techniques to protect the body”
Goshinjutsu, or Self Defence, is not necessarily Martial Arts.
Goshinjutsu Self Defence should be quick to learn, easy to remember and extremely efficient. Anything relying on strength, fitness, or flexibility may not serve us when we grow older, find ourselves out of shape or ill, or suddenly woken in the night and forced to defend our home and families whilst still half asleep.
Goshinjutsu Self Defence techniques have only one real purpose; to survive!
Although most Martial Arts are born from some form of Goshinjutsu Self Defence, not all Martial Arts are Self Defence motivated and might instead have their primary focus in such things as sporting competition, physical fitness, health or spiritual growth.
Judo for instance has its main motivation in physical and moral development, and more recently sports competition. It was born from Jujutsu, which at the time was being taught in Japan with the sole motivation towards Goshinjutsu or Self Defence. Kano’s motivation for creating Judo was because he felt that Jujutsu was only focused on Goshinjutsu Self Defence, on only the destructive technique, with little or no focus on growth.
Goshinjutsu Self Defence and Self Protection are closely related but once again are not necessarily the same.
Self Protection involves strategical choices in order to avoid the danger before it even occurs. Training your body to run 100m faster than another, could be considered Self Protection. Goshinjutsu Self Defence means its already too late to run.
Goshinjutsu Self Defence in its purest form does not recognize the laws of civilized society, it only knows the desire to survive. It is an unfortunate truth that many people who only train in Goshinjutsu Self Defence, without some other form of moral foundation or practise, do find themselves in trouble with the law. Even though, when the trouble began, they were in fact the victim.
Goshinjutsu Self Defence cannot really afford self control; it only has time to know to survive!
