Samurai Kindy Martial Arts for Children Ages 5 to 6 yrs
The Martial Arts are one of the most rewarding activities your child can be involved in. Featuring age-specific curriculum, our popular Samurai Kindy program is not only fun and exciting, but will also teach important life skills from an early age.
Our classes have helped children experience improvements in self-confidence, concentration, awareness and physical. Martial Arts are great for developing and improving basic motor skills. Both team working and individual goal setting are an important part of Samurai Kindy, as is good behaviour – in class, at home, and at school.
What happens in class?
All classes begin (and end) with the practise of gratitude and respect. Through our bowing-in and bowing-out ceremonies, as well as other classroom etiquette, we show our readiness to learn and say thank you;
- To each other, for making it possible for us to grow
- To our teachers, for their unique experiences
- To martial arts itself, for the benefits offered to us
Learning to fall safely is the first and most important skill we teach; falling over is after all a more common occurrence than is a fight. Next we work to develop awareness, balance and movement in order to avoid or evade an attack. Finally we develop physical techniques such as blocking, punching, kicking, and grappling as a last resort to possible conflict.
Students will learn and practise through kata (set patterns) and kihon (attack drills) in a safe supervised environment. Students all wear protective gloves and drills are always carried out at low speed. Soft pads and shields are also used to develop reflexes, power and focus.
Most importantly, we do not see our Martial Arts as simply fighting. We are also not a competitive style of martial arts, and do not teach a “win at all cost” mentality. We believe Martial Arts are about living. More often than not, the best fights are the ones that never took place.
Monitoring progress
We use a combination of Merit-Badges and Grading’s to assess student progress. There are 8 Merit-Badges guiding students through the 4 main coloured star grades; Yellow Earth, Blue Water, Red Fire, Green Wind.
Merit-Badges are sewn down the left sleeve of the uniform. Coloured belt stars are sewn onto the students uniform belt and signify their rank or progression within the class.
Whenever a Samurai Kindy student turns 7 years of age they graduate to Samurai School. Their uniform changes from white to black, and they are awarded a coloured belt worthy of their Samurai Kindy grade.
What to wear
During the trial period students should wear a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms.
Once the trial is over Samurai Kindy students wear a white uniform (gi-gee) and white belt (obi-obee). A plain white t-shirt can be worn underneath the jacket during cooler weather or instead of the jacket during hot summer days. You can purchase our Samurai Kindy white tshirt from your instructor.
What to bring?
Please bring a drink of water to every class.
Student members must bring their protective gloves to all classes.
