Samurai Self Defence Kata 1

Samurai Self Defence Kata 1 vs Punch Attacks from Distance.

This is the 1st of 5 kata learned as students progress through the Mu Te Shin Do syllabus.  This first kata specifically focuses on defense against punch type attacks, launched from a distance.

The Samurai Self Defence kata merges techniques from the Kodokan Judo self defence kata with techniques and footwork from Ninjutsu and Jujutsu to form a comprehensive self defence kata.

In this first kata the student learns to defend against different types of basic punches performed with evading attitude as opposed to a fighting attitude. Although punching is used in this kata the attacks can easily be changed to a push or armed attacks such as knife or other weapon.

At first it should be practised slowly focusing on breathing and balance maintaining good taisabaki.  The idea is to move out of the way of the danger, then deal with the danger, without becoming emotionally effected – so please smile as much as you like when you perform this one, and remember to look after your training partner.

To understand it in a more self defence situation, students can armour up and practise at varying speeds, distances, and against weapons.
