Samurai School Merit-Badge Program

Merit-Badges are small personal goals that help us achieve larger personal goals – such as colour belt gradings.  Each colour belt contains a number of individual skills which a student must master in order to qualify for a new colour belt.

Students can use the Merit-Badge Program to monitor how well they are learning and understanding these skills.  Instructors can also use it to monitor how well individual students are progressing.

If a student can pass each of the badges for target grade, then it is likely they will do very well in their next grading.

Merit Badge Assessment

Because we mark Merit-Badges very strictly we like students to ask if they can assess for a Merit-Badge; this way we know they are confident and ready.  An Instructor may still refuse to test if they believe the test is not safe for the student’s skill level.

Sometimes assessments will be carried out in groups, and other times they will be done as and when an individual requests to assess for a badge.

The Assessment is free.  When a student passes a badge, the instructor should sign the student’s Merit-Badge Record Sheet.  They can then purchase a badge at any time after passing the badge.

Merit-Badges are worn in neat rows down the left sleeve of the uniform jacket.
